Hi i was thinking of getting a Valknut tattooed on my chest but i’m kind of afraid considering that i’m a law enforcement major and I don’t want any potential employers thinking i’m a Neo-Nazi. The meaning behind this symbol is that during battle Vikings would have it tattooed on them or they would have the symbol on their person property so that if they were killed in action the feminine angel like spirit known as the Valkyrie would come and take the warrior’s soul to Vahalla which is the Viking version of Heaven where you get to spend eternity with Odin and what not. Any way i know that a lot of people think Nordic themed body art is for the most part is racist but I have Nordic blood in me and I think it would be a cool cultural statement. I live in an Irish neighborhood and all i see is people with Celtic Cross tattoos and i don’t think its fair that i can’t show pride for my heritage.
What do you guys think this is the symbol i want tattooed——http://chaotic-tendencies.com/concept_art/valknut_tattoo.jpg

It is a symbol which has been appropriated by white supremacist groups so you will have to figure out if you want to take a stand and try to reclaim it.

The runes are probably fine although a couple of those have been stolen by the white supremacist groups too. On the other hand – the valknut is a bit more obscure – It’s not like you are trying to put a swastika on your chest, (another stolen symbol) which would be much more likely to be misconstrued.

If you want to try to make it more likely to be seen in a favorable way; what if you placed it in the center of a "world tree" image? Combining the symbols with the image of Yggdrasil (in the leaves and branches) with the trunk extending down as far as you think good, it would then represent as well the ordeal of the All-father on the tree to gain the runes, if you are not Asatru I cannot make many other suggestions.

I need the viking prayer from the 13th warrior translated in old norse. I’m looking to have it tattooed on my right side. Can somebody help me out?

"Lo there do I see my father. Lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, in the Halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever."

Avoid Lyssia’s text. First off, sure, Swedish is one of the languages which old Norse turned into, but I doubt you want modern Swedish for your tattoo. Secondly you can’t trust something translated by Google Translate (I can tell it is, since I’m Swedish myself).

Then you should know that this quote is an altered version of a quoted prayer by an Iraqi traveler who went to Scandinavia back in the days. Historians and archaeologists don’t take his words for through, as he was very biased as a Muslim and looked down at the Norse paganism very much. There is in other words a great chance that it’s not very accurate. Then consider that there is no original old Norse prayer preserved. So what you got there is an altered English translation of a most likely altered Arabic translation of an old Norse original. You can expect it to not be very accurate any longer.

If all that is fine with you, you should also know that people speaking old Norse are few. If you are serious about getting a good translation, I suggest you send an e-mail to the Swedish National Heritage Board and ask how you can get in touch with a translator. http://www.raa.se/cms/extern/en/about_us/our_mission/our_mission.html
Also the National Historical Museum could be an idea: http://www.historiska.se/misc/menyer-och-funktioner/menyer/globala-menyn/inenglish/

If they can’t help you, try to find their equals in Norway, Denmark and Iceland. You will most likely not get a good translation here at Yahoo Answers.

I want to get "mind over matter and soul before flesh" my other tattoo was a Gaelic translation of loyalty that i got from a family relative who spoke the language but has now passed away, i don’t want to get my tattoos in different languages so i was wondering if anyone could help?

This website is a forum for Irish-English translations, I’d check there since a lot of the users (other than those looking for translations of course) would be gaeilgeoirs (native Irish speakers).
